Fear and Health

Writer: J. Shruti Khurana J. Shruti Khurana

I’m at a stage in life where I constantly wonder if what I’m eating is right for my body and if the activities I’m doing will help me stay healthy. My grandmother, who is 78 years old, is struggling with her knees and legs. She has always been passionate about taking care of herself and not asking for help, but now she sometimes has to ask for assistance due to the pain in her legs. In contrast, I see elderly women here in Canada still going to the gym and managing to walk on the treadmill for at least 30 minutes a day.

I’m only 25, but I’ve already begun to worry about my health and that of my family. As I think more about my family’s well-being, I’ve also started to understand my dad’s perspective—his constant concern for his children.

When you find yourself in a situation where you don’t understand why your parents aren’t accepting your decisions or why they don’t seem to understand your position, it’s often because they’re trying to look out for you in a way that brings them peace of mind. They want to feel that they’ve done right by you, that they’ve given you a good life (according to their definition of a good life), and that you’re happy with it.

There is also a hard truth though that no matter how much you care about the other person, be it family, partner or friends, everyone has their way of living and will only change for good if they wish to do so. No matter how much I force my dad to walk daily, he understands his body better and has his priorities lined up differently. For him, his work falls first and when he is done for the day and tries to walk, his body has already given up and is ready to sleep. There is no right or wrong anymore, there are just goals and how one would like to achieve it. I fear that in the race for wealth, life and peace, my loved ones may get distracted from prioritizing health!

I hope whoever is reading this is at least taking care of themselves :)
